im not sure if l have the 200r4 or the 700 r4 trans and need to put a v-8 into it, Am l limited to what kind of v-8 l can put into it?for example pontiac,chevy,olds,305,350,301,or 400 Basically im wanting to put a v-8 into it and wanna know what the best choice is. thanks

a gm 350 should fit right in..they are plentiful, dependable and parts and after market stuff is affordable and available all over.

You have a 700r4 however the V6 700r4 will NOT bolt up to any V8 you put in there.

A motor other than a small block chevy will not be a direct swap. A buick, olds or pontiac motor will require more work than slapping in a 350 or any other small block chevy.

As far as what kind of small block to put in..well it all depends on your goals and plans for the car

The other post is correct - even if ur trans would bolt up, u r looking at a seriously underbuilt trans.

You r not limited - depending upon how much work u want to do to modify - any small block CAN fit in - & the emissions requirements in ur state.

A simple, direct bolt in will be any of the stock 305-350 is that were found in the 3rd gens. Your simplest & most-potential swap would be a L98 5.7 (350) TP l set-up. Best bet would be to source the engine/trans/ECM/harness out of a donor car, preferably an automatic trans to eliminate u trying to swap the pedal assembly & such into ur car. You will need all that stuff to adequately control the car (you can go aftermarket, but the stock stuff works well, & can get u to about 350 horsepower with simple mods).
While you're at it, u can put a stroker crank in while u have that engine out, so u have a 383 setup, which will be good for about 380-400 horsepower (limited by the TP l setup is flow capacity).

The best thing about all this is it will fit under ur low hood without any hitches.

l have done many of these swaps. My 1988 camaro is a v6 to v8 swap. My dad is 82 firebird is also a v6 to v8 swap.

Your transmission is a 700r4 which will not bolt up to a v8. The 60* v6 engines had a diff bolt pattern from the 90* v6 & v8's.. BTW 200 4R is a stronger trans than 700r4 & most had a unifit bell that bolts to just about all GM engines.

You will need a v8 transmission. 700r4 from 84-up v8, or a th-350 long shaft trans from early 70 is to mid 80 is c10 pickup.

Stay with a small block chevy engine.. 262, 265, 267, 283, 302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400

You will need to change ur K member mounted engine mounts. $20 at local parts store for the v8 mounts.

The brake line that runs next to driver is side engine mount will need to be bent by hand out of the way alittle.

If u go with a carb'ed v8 u will need to use a mallory high pressure adjustable fuel reg & ur stock in tank elec fuel pump.. The reg will let u adjust pressure down from stock 40 psi or what ever to the needed 6 psi

If u go with an EF l engine u need the v8 is ECU
