l am looking at a 2000 pontiac grand am with 138000(mostly highway) miles on it.It has leather, moonroof, power seats, chrome GT rims, traction control, and all the little things.My main concern is the engine.The exterior and interior are in perfect shape.Just wondering if any of you mechanics out there, or grand am owners could tell me anything about the engine and how reliable it is?The car is listed at 3800 dollars right now and l am cautious on buying it because of all the miles it has.Is this a good buy?

That is kind of pricey. l live in ohio & see grand ams with fewer miles for a little bit more money. l am assuming it is the gt.Is this a dealership or private owner? l own a 2004 gt with 63,000 miles & love it. l would look around a little first. If u do buy it make sure u take it for a test drive on the highway & test the acceleration, listen for noise, keep ur eye on the temperature gauge, & have a mechanic inspect it. Any other questions about the car feel free to ask.

it does seem alittle pricey with that amount of miles , these engines are known for lower intake leaks ,gaskets rot out,and front lower control arm bushings (rear vertical)
coming apart at least here in the northeast

We had a 1999 Grand Am that was a POS at 38,000 miles.
Forget about the engine, this car had major design flaws. The back doors would leak, the bearings went bad at 20,000 miles, the battery and alternator had to be changed twice.

l would not even touch this for over $2,000.

l have a 2000 Grand Am with 110,000 miles & l absolutely love it. It runs great. The only problem l have had is the drivers side window, the motor has broken 3 times because the pulley system is plastic & gets brittle in the winter. l think the price is a little high on the one u r looking at because of the miles. l think closer to 3000 would be reasonable. l would still have a mechanic look it over to be sure. Oh - another problem with the 2000 version is brakes. l have had several brake jobs & finally my brother who is a mechanic put on pricey rotors & pads & l have not had problems since.

1999 was a bad first year for this car. My 2001 has only had the intake manifold gasket problem (V6). The rest of the car is rock solid, no leaks, no rattles, no squeeks. At 138,000 this one should already have the new gaskets l would think.

l have a 2000 Grand Am GT1 that has been a very solid car for me. The Gt is seem to be a safer bet than the SE. The Gt V6 engines have had very few problems. However, if it still has the original wiring kit, it will need to be replaced soon. For 3800, u might ask the owner to do it before buying.
The only problems I've had r brakes ( do not go cheap, u will actually end up paying way more in the long run), & the blower motor resistor is placed poorly ( it is too exposed too moisture), & will likely fritz out every 2 to 3 years, but only costs maybe 100 bucks to fix.
The pluses -
- l live in a harsh environment, & the car does not have even a speck of rust. And it handles slick roads beautifully.
- Still has plenty of pep & pick-up
- Interior has worn very well
- Went the first 5 1/2 years with virtually no problems. Blower motor once, brakes once.
