shifts into 1, 3 and 5 (all up on the shifter) and nothing in 2, 4 or R (all down on shifter). happened all at once. Drove to work fine but on the way home it just stopped. Is it the shift cables or the transmission? where do l find info on rebuilding trans if needed?
is it definetly the trans, I've rebuilt cars before except the trans. maybe now is time to learn that, any good tips or books for doing this?
it shifts into 1 3 5 and you can feel it engage, in 2 4 R you shift down but nothing connects or engages at all. it drives fine in 1 3 5 even now. l actually drove it home.
lower shift cable on trans is splintered as it enters trans. will try to replace it.

Sounds like the trans went out.
Chiltons is the best for rebuild info.
Id take it to the shopfor rebuilding.
Ive rebuilt trans before, its easy but you need a good place to do it.

If the shift linkages are all good, it will be a broken shift fork inside the trans. Does the stick feel sloppy or jam? Check the linkage connections at the tranny and the shift lever to make sure something there did not come loose or snap.

Head on over to Aamco, Interstate, Cottman, whatever trans shop you can get to..ask them over the phone what a complete rebuild will cost...yes, a complete rebuild...nobody just fixes what is wrong on a trans..they replace everything when it is opened up.and also get a new clutch installed...trans and clutch go like peanut butter and jelly..dont be foolish, repair both at the same time.

Get to a tran shop and have it all rebuilt at once , no since in getting the shaft twice.

The problem is probably right under the stick shifter itself? Something in the linkage is broken.
